“Bienvenidos a Madrid,” came through the speakers as the flight attendant probably let out a sigh of relief at the end of our 9570km (5946.522 mi) flight from LAX.
It has been a surreal experience thus far. In the course of three days, I have been in three different time zones. One day, I was at the aquarium in Maui, Hawaii looking at the sharks and jellyfish. The next, I was drinking a fresh fruit smoothie in Claremont, California, only to find myself engaged in Spanish-only conversations and walking under pig statues trying to fly in Madrid, Spain the following day. Sometimes, life can feel as if it were a dream.
The ornate buildings here are beautiful. And, even though I do not yet know all of the rich history that they carry, I could feel their age and character as I walked through their cobblestone streets (Maui does not have many of those).
One image that has stayed with me from my first day in Madrid is that of a woman sitting on the steps leading into one of the many stores that lined the streets. She was not the only person who had a cup out, asking for a little monetary help from the passersby. However, I noticed at the bottom of hers rested a picture of the Virgin Mary, whose eyes looked deep into those who took the time to look deep into the cup. The woman’s intentions behind leaving the picture there still fascinate me. Did she place the religious image there? And, why? If not, who did? And, why?
Still adjusting to the 12-hour time difference, I am excited to see where this dream-like life is going to take me next!
